QTR not wanting to cooperate

Hello Jon and Rachel,

I’m at my wits’ end and would appreciate some help:

I’ve recently replaced my Epson 7890 that died with another 7890. Printer alignment and nozzle checks were fine with the original inks so I flushed with PiezoFlush and installed a brand-new set of Pro inks. Nozzle checks look excellent but when I tried to print using the QTR driver and Print-Tool, it wouldn’t print anymore - as in no ink and not even an attempt by the printhead to move across and print something on the 24” roll - it just spat a blank 20x24” section. I ended up reinstalling all the Piezo components on my Mac running 10.14.6: QTR 2.8.2 then PiezoDN 2.8.1, Community Edition 3.3.1 and Print-Tool 2.4.0. I then ran the Quad 7890-PiezoDNPro driver installer and changed all the settings within Print-Tool: 20x24” Centered and QuadToneRIP set to Pro-PiezoDN-Master for Curve 1, Roll Feed, 2880 dpi, uni-directional and PK ink. Now it’s printing but all black and 20” wide regardless of what image I put in Print-Tool!

I realise that the topic of all-black ink has been broached before - and that permissions are often to blame - but I have checked and double-checked to make sure that everything has been opened wide in /Library/Printers/QTR/quadtone (using sudo chmod -R 777 on all folders)…

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Roy

Hi Roy,

Navigate to /Library/Printers/QTR/quadtone/(your printer installation) and confirm that all the curves in the printer you are having this issue with have permissions set to “everyone” as “read & write”. Your getting all black usually is a symptom that they do not. Check info on them and change them in the installed library.

Let us know if that works!

best,

Jon

Hi Jon,

I’ve triple-checked and all folders and files within the /Library/Printers/QTR/quadtone folder have Read & Write privileges for everyone… including, of course, the Quad7890-PiezoDNPro folder and the .quad curves within it that I’m using.

Roy

I think I might have found the source of the problem: quadtonerip is missing from the CUPS backend (/usr/libexec/cups/backend), which might explain why the print job is also not paying any attention to the position and format of the test print…

I’m going to try reinstalling QTR completely from scratch tomorrow and will let you know.

If you have any other leads, I’m all ears!

Best regards,

Roy

I thought that you had or I would have suggested it! Also I assumed you can print to the printer through the EPSON driver (even though it will look funny). But that would insure its not a hardware issue with a new to you used printer. The QTR reinstall should do it!

Best,

Jon
